1 그러나 7년째되던 해에 여호야다는 용기를 내여 여호람의 아들 아사리야, 여호하난의 아들 이스마엘, 오벳의 아들 아사리야, 아다야의 아들 마아세야, 시그리의 아들 엘리사밧 등과 내통하였다. 이들은 모두 백명대장이였다.2 그들은 유대전국을 돌아다니며 유대 모든 성읍에 사는 레위사람과 이스라엘의 각 가문의 어른들을 모았다. 예루살렘에 도착한3 이들 온 군중은 하나님의 성전에서 왕과 계약을 맺었다. 여호야다가 그들에게 말하였다. ≪보아라. 여기에 왕세자가 계신다. 여호와께서 다윗의 후손을 두고하신 말씀을 따라 이분을 왕으로 모셔라.4 이제 너희는 이렇게 하여라. 안식일에 근무하는 너희 제사장과 레위사람들 가운데 3분의 1은 현관문을 지키고5 다른 3분의 1은 왕궁을 지키며 나머지 3분의 1은 성문을 지키고 일반백성은 여호와의 성전뜰에 모여라.6 아무도 여호와의 성전안으로는 들어가지 못한다. 거기에는 제사장들과 그들을 돕는 레위사람들만이 들어갈수 있는곳이다. 그들은 성별된사람이므로 들어갈수 있다. 일반백성은 모두 여호와께서 분부하신 규례를 지키도록 하여라.7 누구든지 성전으로 들어가려는자는 죽여라. 레위사람들은 각자 무기를 들고 임금님을 호위하여라. 어디로 가시든지 임금님곁을 떠나지 말아라.≫8 레위사람들과 온 유대사람들은 제사장 여호야다의 명령을 따랐다. 제사장 여호야다가 모든 반에 비상근무령을 내렸기때문에 장군들은 안식일 근무반과 안식일 비번반을 모두 출두시켰다.9 제사장 여호야다는 다윗왕이 하나님의 성전에 마련해둔 창과 긴 방패, 둥근 방패를 백명대장들에게 나누어주었다.10 그리고 전군에게 무기를 들게 하고 성전 남쪽과 북쪽전면에 배치하여 제단과 성전을 지키고 왕을 둘러싸게 하였다.11 그런 다음 왕세자를 나오게 하고는 면류관을 얹고 률법책을 주고 그를 왕으로 삼았다. 여호야다는 그의 아들들과 함께 그에게 기름을 붓고는 ≪임금님 만세!≫하고 웨쳤다.12 아달리야가 백성들이 기뻐뛰며 왕을 찬양하는 소리를 듣고 백성들이 모인 여호와의 성전에 나가보니13 왕이 군지휘관들과 나팔수들의 호위를 받으며 문어귀 기둥곁에 서있고 지방민들이 기뻐하는가운데 나팔소리 울려퍼지며 합창대는 악기에 맞추어 노래를 부르고있지 않는가. 아달리야는 옷을 찢으며 ≪반역이다, 반역이다.≫하고 웨쳤다.14 그러자 제사장 여호야다가 군대를 거느린 백명대장들에게 명령하였다. ≪저 계집을 밖으로 끌어내다가 칼로 쳐죽여라. 따르는자가 있거든 함께 쳐죽여라.≫ 제사장 여호야다는 그 녀자를 여호와의 성전안에서 죽여서는 안된다고 생각했던것이다.15 사람들은 그 녀자를 왕궁으로 끌어내여 군마 출입문부근에서 죽였다.16 그런 다음 여호야다는 여호와와 온 백성과 왕 사이에 계약을 맺어 여호와의 백성이 되기로 하였다.17 온 백성이 바알의 신전으로 가서 거기에 있는 제단들을 헐고 우상들을 부시고 바알의 제사장 마딴을 그 제단앞에서 죽였다.18 그리고나서 여호야다는 여호와의 성전 일을 다윗이 했던대로 레위사람 제사장들에게 맡겼다. 다윗은 여호와의 성전을 그들에게 맡겨 모세의 법에 기록되여있는대로 기뻐 노래하며 여호와께 번제를 드리도록 손수 절차를 제정해주었던것이다.19 또 여호와의 성전문마다 문지기들을 세워 부정한 사람은 아무도 들어가지 못하게 하였다.20 그리고 백명대장들과 귀족들과 공직을 맡은 사람들과 온 지방민들을 거느리고 여호와의 성전에서 왕을 모시고 웃대문 가운데칸을 지나 대궐로 내려가 룡상에 모셨다.21 지방민들은 모두 기뻐하는데 서울은 잠잠하기만 하였다. 아달리야는 칼에 맞아 죽었다.

1 Now when Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal family.2 But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and stole him away from among the king's sons who were being put to death, and she put him and his nurse in a bedroom. Thus they hid him from Athaliah, so that he was not put to death.3 And he remained with her six years, hidden in the house of the LORD, while Athaliah reigned over the land.4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of the Carites and of the guards, and had them come to him in the house of the LORD. And he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the LORD, and he showed them the king's son.5 And he commanded them, “This is the thing that you shall do: one third of you, those who come off duty on the Sabbath and guard the king's house6 (another third being at the gate Sur and a third at the gate behind the guards) shall guard the palace.7 And the two divisions of you, which come on duty in force on the Sabbath and guard the house of the LORD on behalf of the king,8 shall surround the king, each with his weapons in his hand. And whoever approaches the ranks is to be put to death. Be with the king when he goes out and when he comes in.”9 The captains did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded, and they each brought his men who were to go off duty on the Sabbath, with those who were to come on duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest.10 And the priest gave to the captains the spears and shields that had been King David's, which were in the house of the LORD.11 And the guards stood, every man with his weapons in his hand, from the south side of the house to the north side of the house, around the altar and the house on behalf of the king.12 Then he brought out the king's son and put the crown on him and gave him the testimony. And they proclaimed him king and anointed him, and they clapped their hands and said, “Long live the king!”13 When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the LORD to the people.14 And when she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to the custom, and the captains and the trumpeters beside the king, and all the people of the land rejoicing and blowing trumpets. And Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, “Treason! Treason!”15 Then Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains who were set over the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to death with the sword anyone who follows her.” For the priest said, “Let her not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”16 So they laid hands on her; and she went through the horses' entrance to the king's house, and there she was put to death.17 And Jehoiada made a covenant between the LORD and the king and people, that they should be the LORD's people, and also between the king and the people.18 Then all the people of the land went to the house of Baal and tore it down; his altars and his images they broke in pieces, and they killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars. And the priest posted watchmen over the house of the LORD.19 And he took the captains, the Carites, the guards, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king down from the house of the LORD, marching through the gate of the guards to the king's house. And he took his seat on the throne of the kings.20 So all the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was quiet after Athaliah had been put to death with the sword at the king's house.21 Jehoash was seven years old when he began to reign.

4 But in the seventh year Jehoiada sent and brought the captains of the Carites and of the guards, and had them come to him in the house of the LORD. And he made a covenant with them and put them under oath in the house of the LORD, and he showed them the king's son.
