1 로마황제 디베료가 다스린지 15년째 되던 해에 본디오 빌라도가 유대총독으로 있었다. 그때에 갈릴리지방의 령주는 헤롯이였고 이두래와 드라고닛지방의 령주는 헤롯의 동생 빌립이였으며 아빌레네지방의 령주는 루사니아였다.2 그리고 당시의 대제사장은 안나스와 가야바였다. 바로 그무렵에 스가랴의 아들 요한이 광야에서 하나님의 말씀을 들었다.3 요한은 요단강부근의 모든 지방을 두루 다니며 ≪회개하고 세례를 받아라. 그러면 죄를 용서받을 것이다.≫라고 선포하였다.4 이것은 예언자 이사야의 예언서에 기록된 말씀대로였다. ≪광야에서 웨치는자의 소리 ＜너희는 주의 길을 닦고 그의 길을 고르게 하여라.5 모든 골짜기는 메워지고 높은 산과 작은 언덕은 눕혀져 굽은 길이 곧아지며 험한 길이 고르게 되는 날.6 모든 사람이 하나님의 구원을 보리라.＞≫7 요한은 자기에게 세례를 받으려고 나오는 사람들에게 이렇게 말하였다. ≪이 독사의 족속들아, 닥쳐올 징벌을 피하라고 누가 일러주더냐.8 너희는 회개했다는 증거를 행실로 보여라. 그리고 ＜아브라함이 우리의 조상이다.＞라는 말을 아예 하지도 말라. 사실 하나님은 이 돌들로도 아브라함의 자녀를 만드실수 있다.9 도끼가 이미 나무뿌리에 닿았으니 좋은 열매를 맺지 않는 나무는 다 찍어 불속에 던질 것이다.≫10 군중이 요한에게 ≪그러면 우리는 어떻게 해야 하겠습니까.≫ 하고 물었다.11 요한이 ≪속옷 두벌 가진 사람은 한벌도 없는 사람에게 주고 먹을것이 있는 사람도 이와 같이 남과 나누어 먹어야 한다.≫라고 대답하였다.12 세리들도 와서 세례를 받고 ≪선생님, 우리는 어떻게 했으면 좋겠습니까.≫라고 물었다.13 요한이 ≪정한대로만 받고 그 이상은 받아내지 말라≫고 하였다.14 군인들도 ≪저희는 어떻게 해야 합니까.≫ 하고 물었다. 요한이 ≪협박하거나 속임수를 써서 남의 물건을 빼앗지 말고 자기가 받은 봉급으로 만족하여라.≫고 일러주었다.15 백성들은 그리스도를 기다리고 있던터였으므로 요한을 보고 모두들 속으로 그가 혹시 그리스도가 아닐가 하고 생각하였다.16 그러나 요한은 모든 사람들에게 이렇게 말하였다. ≪나는 너희에게 물로 세례를 주지만 이제 멀지 않아 성령과 불로 세례를 주실분이 오신다. 그분은 나보다 더 훌륭한분이여서 나는 그분의 신발끈을 풀어드릴 자격조차 없다.17 그분은 손에 키를 들고 타작마당의 곡식을 깨끗이 가려 알곡을 모아 고간에 들이고 쭉정이는 꺼지지 않는 불에 태우실 것이다.≫18 그밖에도 요한은 사람들에게 여러 가지로 권하면서 복음을 전파하였다.
Mark 1
2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way,3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’”4 John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.5 And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.7 And he preached, saying, “After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Matthew 3
1 In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’”4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance.9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham.10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
