Description
Jacob kneels in prayer beside the upright stone he has set as a pillar in the open countryside. His traveling staff and bundle rest nearby, marking him as a pilgrim on the road, while the solitary stone stands as a witness to his encounter with God. The scene reflects Genesis 28, when Jacob, fleeing from Esau and journeying toward Haran, slept with a stone for his pillow and received the vision of the ladder reaching to heaven. After hearing the Lord’s covenant promise, Jacob rose, set the stone upright, poured oil on it, and named the place Bethel, “the house of God.” The artwork emphasizes worship, covenant remembrance, and the sacredness of a place where God reveals His presence to a traveler in need of guidance.
