1 As soon as King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD.2 And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the secretary, and the senior priests, covered with sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz.3 They said to him, “Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of distress, of rebuke, and of disgrace; children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to bring them forth.4 It may be that the LORD your God heard all the words of the Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to mock the living God, and will rebuke the words that the LORD your God has heard; therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.”5 When the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah,6 Isaiah said to them, “Say to your master, ‘Thus says the LORD: Do not be afraid because of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have reviled me.7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, so that he shall hear a rumor and return to his own land, and I will make him fall by the sword in his own land.’”8 The Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria fighting against Libnah, for he heard that the king had left Lachish.9 Now the king heard concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, “Behold, he has set out to fight against you.” So he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,10 “Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, devoting them to destruction. And shall you be delivered?12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, the nations that my fathers destroyed, Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, and the people of Eden who were in Telassar?13 Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, the king of Hena, or the king of Ivvah?’”14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of the LORD and spread it before the LORD.15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD and said: “O LORD, the God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.16 Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to mock the living God.17 Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands18 and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they were destroyed.19 So now, O LORD our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, are God alone.”20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Your prayer to me about Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard.21 This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: “She despises you, she scorns you— the virgin daughter of Zion; she wags her head behind you— the daughter of Jerusalem.22 “Whom have you mocked and reviled? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes to the heights? Against the Holy One of Israel!23 By your messengers you have mocked the Lord, and you have said, ‘With my many chariots I have gone up the heights of the mountains, to the far recesses of Lebanon; I felled its tallest cedars, its choicest cypresses; I entered its farthest lodging place, its most fruitful forest.24 I dug wells and drank foreign waters, and I dried up with the sole of my foot all the streams of Egypt.’25 “Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should turn fortified cities into heaps of ruins,26 while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted before it is grown.27 “But I know your sitting down and your going out and coming in, and your raging against me.28 Because you have raged against me and your complacency has come into my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will turn you back on the way by which you came.29 “And this shall be the sign for you: this year eat what grows of itself, and in the second year what springs of the same. Then in the third year sow and reap and plant vineyards, and eat their fruit.30 And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.31 For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the LORD will do this.32 “Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there, or come before it with a shield or cast up a siege mound against it.33 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the LORD.34 For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for the sake of my servant David.”35 And that night the angel of the LORD went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.36 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went home and lived at Nineveh.37 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword and escaped into the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

1 히스기야왕은 그들의 보고를 듣고나서 입고있던 옷을 찢고 삼베옷을 두르고 여호와의 성전에 들어가2 궁내대신 엘리아김과 시종무관 셉나와 고위 제사장들에게 모두 삼베옷을 입혀 아모스의 아들 예언자 이사야에게 가서3 왕의 말을 전하게 하였다. ≪이날은 우리에게 환난의 날이며 질책과 치욕의 날이요. 우리는 마치 애기를 낳으려하나 애기를 낳을 힘이 없는 산모와 같소.4 그대의 하나님 여호와께서는 앗수르왕이 보낸 시종무관이 살아계신 하나님을 조롱하여 한 말을 모두 들으셨을것이요. 그리고 그대의 하나님 여호와께서는 그 말을 들으시고 꾸짖으실것이요. 아직 살아남아있는 사람들을 위하여 기도를 드려주시오.≫5 히스기야왕의 시종들이 이사야에게 가자6 이사야는 이렇게 대답하였다. ≪가서 그대들의 상전께 전하시오. 이것은 여호와의 말씀이요. ＜앗수르왕의 아첨배들이 나를 비방하여 한 말을 가지고 놀라지 말라.7 내가 앗수르왕을 귀신에게 사로잡히게 하여 뜬 소문을 듣고 자기 나라로 철수하게 하리라. 그후에 거기에서 칼에 맞아죽게 하리라.＞≫8 이때 시종장관은 앗수르왕이 라기스를 떠났다는 소식을 듣고 퇴각하여 립나를 공격하고있는 앗수르왕과 합세하였다.9 앗수르왕은 구스왕 디르하가가 자기와 교전하기 위하여 진격하고있다는 정보에 접하고 히스기야에게 다시 특사를 보내며 일렀다.10 ≪유대왕 히스기야에게 이렇게 전하여라. ＜네가 의지하고 있는 너의 하나님이 예루살렘은 앗수르왕에게 정복되지 않으리라고 말한다 하더라도 그 말에 속지 말라.11 앗수르의 력대렬왕들이 주위의 여러 나라들을 정복하고 그 백성들을 무찌른 사실을 너는 분명히 들어알고있지 않느냐. 그래도 네가 피할수 있으리라고 바라느냐.12 나의 선왕들은 여러 나라를 쳐서 무찔렀다. 고산, 하란, 레셉, 들라살에 있는 에덴족 등 이들 나라의 신들이 제나라를 구출했더냐.13 하맛, 아르밧, 스발와임, 헤나, 이와, 이 모든 나라의 왕들은 어디 갔느냐.＞≫14 히스기야는 특사들에게서 서신을 받아읽었다. 그리고나서 그는 곧장 여호와의 전에 올라가 여호와앞에 그 편지를 펼쳐놓고15 이렇게 기도하였다.16 ≪만군의 여호와, 그룹들우에서 다스리시는 이스라엘의 하나님이여, 당신은 지상의 모든 왕국을 지배하시는 유일하신 하나님이십니다. 당신께서 하늘과 땅을 만드셨습니다.17 여호와여, 귀를 기울이시고 들어주십시오. 여호와여, 눈을 뜨시고 보십시오. 산헤립이 보낸자들이 살아계신 하나님을 조롱하여 하는 말을 들어보십시오.18 여호와여, 앗수르의 력대왕들이 이웃의 여러 나라들과 그 령토를 짓밟았고19 그 나라들의 신들을 불에 던졌음은 사실입니다. 하기야 그 나라들의 신은 사람의 손으로 만든 물건으로서 다만 나무와 돌에 지나지 않습니다. 그렇지 않고서야 어찌 없애버릴수 있었겠습니까.20 여호와 우리의 하나님이여, 그의 손아귀로부터 우리를 구원하여주십시오. 그리하여 땅우의 모든 왕국들이 여호와여, 당신만이 홀로 하나님이심을 알게 하여 주십시오.≫21 아모스의 아들 이사야가 히스기야에게 사람을 보내여 말을 전하게 하였다. ≪＜앗수르왕 산헤립을 두고 간구한 너의 기도를 내가 들었다.＞하고 이스라엘의 하나님 여호와께서 말씀하셨소.22 여호와께서 산헤립을 두고 선언하신 말씀을 들으시오. ＜시온의 딸 처녀가 너를 비웃고 멸시하리라. 네가 퇴각할 때 예루살렘의 딸들이 그 머리를 들리라.23 네가 누구를 조소하고 비방하였는가. 네가 누구에게 큰 소리를 쳤는가. 이스라엘의 거룩한이에게 너는 거만한 눈길을 던졌다.24 너는 특사를 보내여 주를 조소하여 말하였다. 내가 나의 병거를 타고 위대한 업적을 이루었노라고 또 높은 산을 정복하였으며 레바논의 막다른 봉우리까지 올랐노라고 레바논의 우람한 삼목과 가장 훌륭한 잣나무를 내가 베여 제쳤노라고 레바논의 평온한 안식처 그 숲과 초원을 내가 다 밟았노라고25 내가 또 외국땅에서 우물을 파고 그 물을 마셔보았으며 나의 발바닥으로 애급에 있는 모든 강물의 물을 말렸노라고26 그러나 너는 오래전에 듣지 못하였느냐. 내가 이룩한 이 모든 업적을 오래전에 내가 그 일을 계획하였고 또 지금 내가 그 일을 성취하였으니 견고한 요새는 무너져 한낱 돌무더기에 불과하게 되리라.27 그 나라 백성들은 기진맥진하여 실망하고 부끄러움을 당하였다. 그들의 신세는 들의 식물같고 동풍에 날려가는 지붕우의 마른풀과 같다.28 나는 네가 일어나고 앉는것, 나가고 들어오는것을 다 알고있다.29 또한 네가 나를 기억하여 품고있는 분노와 오만을 나는 일찍부터 알았다. 그러므로 너의 코에 쇠고리를 꿰고 입에 자갈을 물려 네가 왔던 그 길로 되돌려 보내리라.30 이것이 너에게 증거가 될것이다. 올해에는 떨어진 씨에서 저절로 난 곡식을 먹을것이고 래년에는 심지 않고 저절로 자라난 곡식을 먹으리라. 그러나 후년에는 씨를 뿌려서 추수하고 포도밭을 가꾸고 그 열매를 먹으리라.31 유대땅에 살아 남은자들은 땅속으로 싱싱한 뿌리를 내릴것이고 땅우에서 열매를 맺으리라.32 살아남은자들이 예루살렘에서 나오고 난을 피한자들이 시온산에서 나올것이다. 만군의 여호와께서 열성을 부어 이 일을 이루시리라.＞33 그러므로 여호와께서 앗수르왕을 두고 이렇게 말씀하셨소. ＜그는 이 성에 들어오지 못하리라. 이 성에 화살을 쏘지도 못하리라. 방패를 가지고 이 성에 쳐들어오지 못할것이며 토성을 쌓지도 못하리라.34 그는 제가 온 길로 되돌아갈것이며 이 성에는 결코 발을 들여놓지 못하리라. 이것은 여호와의 말이다.35 나자신을 보아서 그리고 나의 종 다윗을 보아서 내가 이 성을 지키고 구원하리라.＞≫36 그날밤 여호와의 천사가 나타나 앗수르진영에서 군인 18만 5천명을 쳤다. 아침이 되여 날이 밝았을 때 그들은 모두 시체로 발견되였다.37 앗수르왕 산헤립은 막사를 걷어 니느웨로 돌아가서 그곳에 머물렀다.38 그런데 어느날, 그가 그의 신인 니스록의 신전에서 례배하고있을 때 그의 두 아들 아드람멜렉과 사레셀이 그를 칼로 쳐죽이고는 아라랏지방으로 도망하였다. 그의 아들 에살핫돈이 왕위를 계승하였다.
