25 예수께서 따라오는 군중을 향하여 이렇게 말씀하셨다.26 ≪누구든지 나에게 올 때 자기 부모나 처자나 형제자매나 심지어 자기자신마저 버리지 않으면 나의 제자가 될 수 없다.27 그리고 누구든지 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따라오지 않으면 나의 제자가 될 수 없다.≫28 ≪너희 가운데 누가 전망대를 지으려고 한다면 그는 먼저 앉아서 그것을 완성하는데 드는 비용을 따져보고 과연 그만한 돈이 자기에게 있겠는지 곰곰히 생각해보지 않겠느냐.29 기초를 쌓고도 힘이 모자라 완성하지 못한다면 보는 사람마다30 ＜저 사람은 집짓기를 시작해놓고 끝내지도 못하는구나＞라고 하면서 비웃을 것이다.31 또 어떤 임금이 다른 임금과 싸우려고 나아갈 때 2만명의 군대를 거느리고 오는 적을 만명의 군대로 당해낼 수 없다면32 적이 아직 멀리에 있을 때에 사신을 보내여 화평을 정할 것이다.33 너희 가운데 누구든지 나의 제자가 되려면 자기가 가지고 있는 것을 모두 버려야 한다.≫34 ≪소금은 좋은 물건이다. 그러나 만일 소금이 짠맛을 잃으면 무엇으로 다시 짜게 하겠느냐.35 땅에도 소용없고 거름으로도 쓸수 없어 내버릴 수밖에 없다. 들을 귀가 있는 사람은 알아들어라.≫

34 And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.35 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?37 For what can a man give in return for his soul?38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
