Description
The high priest stands inside the Holy of Holies before the Ark of the Covenant, where golden cherubim overshadow the mercy seat in radiant temple light. Incense rises from a censer in the foreground, veiling the sacred space as the priest approaches with the blood of atonement. The scene portrays Yom Kippur, the solemn day when Israel’s high priest entered behind the veil to make atonement for his own sins and for the sins of the people. In Leviticus 16, the ritual reveals both the holiness of God and the necessity of substitutionary cleansing. The mercy seat becomes the meeting place between divine justice and covenant mercy, foreshadowing the New Testament teaching that Christ enters the heavenly sanctuary as the final and perfect High Priest.
